STB x UoN Live Brief – At the Heart of the Community
For this year’s live brief, we set students the task of rebranding a community organisation or venue.
Following a virtual briefing, we ran an interim crit to chat through and offer feedback on their initial ideas before they submitted their final responses. We were on the lookout for creative solutions with thought and consideration behind every decision. We received a range of really unique responses, from a taxidermy museum in East London, to the Coventry Caribbean Association, as well as projects such as doggy daycare, farms, cinemas and barbers. Here are some of our favourites:

UoN Creative Arts – 160 Years
Shahbaaz Zeb
“The identities for the creative art courses in UON are quite scattered and have no overall cohesion. 160 years is a big milestone and covers all forms of art being taught all the way from the boot making to the modern day. I liked the idea of shapes and forms being used to make up a word or an acronym. Since it was 160 years, I initially played around with the number 160 and tried to maintain that as the center of the identity. I then looked through the archives and found an image of these sculptural shapes which is still on campus today. I decided to use those shapes to create a modular word, either ‘art’ or 160.”

Close Encounters
Connor King
“Comics are close to my heart, so choosing Close Encounters felt natural. I realised comic shops can feel intimidating to new customers, so I rebranded the space into a modern community hub that feels more open and welcoming.”

Swindon Harriers Athletic Club
Zachary Sparkes
“My rationale was to give Swindon Harriers a new brand identity. It’s a local athletics club which I was a part of for eight years, so it made the project a personal one. I wanted the rebrand to promote the club to sponsors, raising donations towards the track being resurfaced which hadn’t been done in 25+ years.”
